Escalating Alarm as Multiple Blazes Ignite Overnight

Residents in West Kelowna are on high alert following a series of suspicious fires that erupted during the early hours of Saturday morning. Within a four-hour window, four separate blazes were reported within a two-kilometer radius near the intersection of Old Okanagan Highway and Shannon Lake Road, leading both fire officials and the RCMP to believe the incidents are connected.

A Narrow Escape for Local Homeowners

For resident Josh Sidhe, the ordeal was a terrifying brush with disaster. Woken by his partner after she heard crackling sounds outside, Sidhe was met with a pillar of fire just meters from their home. “It’s terrifying. I’m still feeling quite scared,” Sidhe said, recounting the moment he feared his home was about to be consumed by an out-of-control wildfire. The couple utilized a garden hose to suppress the flames until fire crews arrived, a quick action that likely saved their property.

Kinsmen Park Targeted Multiple Times

The pattern of the fires suggests a deliberate intent to cause disruption. Fire crews were first summoned to Kinsmen Park shortly after midnight to extinguish a garbage bin fire. They were forced to return two more times before dawn to put out a fire in a portable toilet and another involving a picnic table and clothing inside a park gazebo. West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund confirmed that the proximity and timing of the events have triggered a formal investigation.

Community on High Alert During Wildfire Season

The timing of these incidents is particularly distressing as British Columbia remains in the grip of a volatile wildfire season. Chief Brolund emphasized that even small fires have the potential to spread rapidly under current conditions. “Now is an incredibly dangerous time during wildfire season,” Brolund warned, urging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to 911 immediately. While no arrests have been made, the RCMP are actively pursuing leads to determine if an arsonist is responsible for the spree.
