Historic First-Place Finish for Vancouver

Vancouver Whitecaps FC have clinched first place in the MLS Western Conference for the first time in the club’s history. The top seed ensures the squad will hold home-field advantage throughout the Western Conference postseason, with the potential to host the MLS Cup if they advance.

Should Vancouver progress through the bracket, BC Place will serve as the venue for both the Western Conference Semifinals and the Western Conference Final.

Playoff Schedule and Tickets

The postseason run for the Whitecaps begins three weeks from now. Game 1 of their best-of-three opening series is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 22 at BC Place, with the kickoff time yet to be announced. Vancouver’s initial opponent will be the winner of the wild card match between the eighth and ninth seeds.

Regular Season Finale and Fan Appreciation

Following last year’s appearances in both the Concacaf Champions Cup and MLS Cup finals, the club aims to push further in 2026. Before postseason play begins, the Whitecaps will wrap up their regular-season home schedule with their annual Fan Appreciation Match against the Seattle Sounders on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1:30 p.m., for which over 30,000 tickets have already been sold.

Third-Period Rally Lifts Sharks Past Canucks

The San Jose Sharks mounted a third-period comeback on Thursday night, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat the visiting Vancouver Canucks 3-2 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.

Vancouver built an early lead, starting in the first period when Drew O’Connor drove to the net to convert a rebound from Elias Pettersson at the 13:21 mark. The assist extended Pettersson’s point-scoring streak to six games, while O’Connor recorded his second goal of the season. The Canucks outshot the Sharks 12-6 in the opening period.

Liam Öhgren expanded Vancouver’s advantage to 2-0 late in the second period, beating San Jose netminder Yaroslav Askarov from near the right faceoff circle with 1:04 remaining. It was Öhgren’s fourth goal of the season.

Smith and Marchment Spark Quick Surge

San Jose shifted the momentum eight minutes into the second period during a power play, when Will Smith scored his fifth goal of the year from the top of the right circle. Smith struck again with 9:21 remaining in the period off a pass from Macklin Celebrini to tie the game.

Just 11 seconds after the equalizer, the Sharks won a faceoff and Mason Marchment pushed down the left side, scoring past Vancouver goaltender Leevi Merilainen to capture the 3-2 lead for San Jose.

Vancouver attempted a late comeback by pulling Merilainen during a third-period power play to create a 6-on-4 advantage, but failed to capitalize. Askarov stopped 23 shots for the victory, while Merilainen turned away 21 of 24 shots in the loss.

Roster Notes and Upcoming Slate

The loss marks just the second time this season Vancouver held a lead heading into the third period. The Canucks went scoreless on three power-play attempts, whereas San Jose scored once on five power plays. Vancouver’s scratches included Guillaume Brisebois, Brendan Gallagher, and Luke Schenn, while goaltender Thatcher Demko remained sidelined due to a hip injury.

Following the road defeat, Vancouver (3-11-1) returns home for a Halloween match against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Darnell Sankey Earns Top CFL Defensive Honors

B.C. Lions middle linebacker Darnell Sankey has been selected as the Canadian Football League’s top defensive player, following a voting process carried out by the Football Reporters of Canada. The announcement was made on Tuesday during a team gathering where defensive coordinator Mike Benevides delivered the news to the roster.

“Man, I can’t even, I’m like, shaking,” Sankey told his teammates after learning about the honor. “I can’t even describe the feeling. It’s been a pleasure just to be in this building with you all; it’s really something special. I respect everybody here; I love you all. Man, we’ve got to go win this thing.”

Historical Milestones and Defensive Dominance

The 32-year-old linebacker stood out across the league this season by accumulating 136 total defensive plays and 114 tackles. His performance places him beside Hall of Famer Willie Pless as only the second player in CFL history to record 100 or more tackles across three straight campaigns. Standing six feet tall and weighing 242 pounds, Sankey was on the field for every one of the Lions’ 998 defensive snaps during the regular season. He also set a personal mark with 12 pass knock-downs while matching career highs with three sacks and four tackles for loss.

Sankey gathered 158 voting points to capture the award, placing ahead of Adarius Pickett of the Toronto Argonauts (99 points) and Clarence Hicks of the Calgary Stampeders (94 points) in a process that included votes for 14 different players.

Lions Franchise Legacy

Sankey is the 11th B.C. player to earn the award, bringing the franchise’s total wins for the honor to 16. Defensive lineman Mathieu Betts previously claimed the title for the Lions in 2023. Benevides has now coached three recipients of the defensive award, including Betts last year and Cameron Wake in 2008.

“From Day 1, ‘Sank’ has set the standard for what we have wanted to build on defence,” Benevides noted. “He’s the epitome of a pro and the latest in a long line of great winners we’ve had here. From Day 1 of training camp and the first defensive meeting in Kamloops, he’s instilled greatness in our unit.”

Career Context and Playoff Outlook

Now in his fifth CFL campaign, Sankey has participated in 92 career regular-season contests, recording 570 tackles, 11 sacks, nine forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, 29 pass knock-downs, and four interceptions. A Grey Cup champion with the Montreal Alouettes in 2023, he has reached 100 tackles in a season four times in his career.

The Lions are set to visit the Edmonton Elks this Saturday in the West Division final, with the winner earning a berth in the Grey Cup match scheduled for Nov. 15 in Calgary.
