Spokane Chiefs Dominate in Season Opener Over Rockets
The Kelowna Rockets kicked off their 2025-26 WHL season on home ice at Prospera Place against the Spokane Chiefs, but fans saw a rough start as Spokane surged to an early lead. The Chiefs scored four goals in the first period and never looked back, handing Kelowna an 8-2 defeat in the opener.
Rockets Struggle Early
Missing several key players who were away at NHL training camps or sidelined with injuries, the Rockets struggled to establish momentum. Spokane’s quick-strike offense put Kelowna on its heels before the first intermission.
Signs of Life in the Second
Kelowna showed flashes of resilience in the second period. Connor Pankratz scored his first goal of the season with a backhand finish set up by Dawson Gerwing. Later, Kalder Varga added another tally, cutting into Spokane’s lead and giving the crowd hope heading into the third period.
Chiefs Pull Away
Any comeback momentum was short-lived. Spokane regained control and added two more goals in the final frame, sealing the dominant victory and quieting the Prospera Place crowd.
Looking Ahead
The Rockets will look for a stronger showing on the road in their next matchup against the Penticton Vees. With several players expected to return from NHL camps, Kelowna hopes to stabilize its lineup and bounce back in upcoming games.
