ShakeOut BC: Province-Wide Earthquake Drill Tests Readiness Across Communities

Published

on

British Columbians across the province are joining the Great British Columbia ShakeOut this week — a coordinated earthquake drill that tests emergency readiness and promotes awareness of B.C.’s seismic risks.

At 10:16 a.m. on October 16, thousands will take part in the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill, practicing what to do during an earthquake. The annual event underscores the ongoing need for earthquake preparedness in communities along the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

Preparedness Starts at Home

Emergency management officials urge residents to use ShakeOut as an opportunity to review household safety plans. Having a stocked emergency kit, a clear communication plan, and knowing how to respond can significantly reduce risks during a real event.

  • Keep enough food, water, and first aid supplies for 72 hours.
  • Identify safe spots to take cover during a quake.
  • Stay informed through local alerts and community updates.

Collaborative Readiness Across B.C.

Provincial agencies, schools, and local governments are collaborating to improve response capacity through infrastructure upgrades and emergency coordination systems. The ShakeOut highlights how shared preparedness efforts can save lives across every region of British Columbia.
