Mr. Eby goes to Ottawa but it is no laughing matter

Premier David Eby is in Ottawa leading a delegation seeking increased federal investment in major infrastructure and resource-development projects to boost jobs and long-term prosperity in B.C.. The mission includes ministers helping highlight the province’s priority projects and pressing for clarity on timelines and funding commitments from the federal government. Eby emphasized that delivering infrastructure that supports both rural and urban regions is critical to keeping pace with population growth and economic opportunity.

Highways, broadband, and clean energy top the list

The B.C. government is pushing Ottawa to provide accelerated funding for key projects including highway upgrades, broadband expansion, and clean energy infrastructure. Eby also wants assurances on the implementation of federally-prioritized initiatives in B.C., pointing out that about 40 per cent of the projects on the federal priority list are for the province, but many lack concrete schedules or funding commitments.

Trade improvements and regulatory clarity sought

The province is also seeking federal partnership on plans to improve internal trade logistics and reduce regulatory barriers that slow down project approvals and execution. Eby stressed that streamlining processes is essential to speeding up investment and job creation.

Federal response could shape future budgets

These discussions come amid growing fiscal pressures and the need to ensure provincial and federal priorities align. For Eby, securing federal support now could stabilize investment in sectors critical to B.C.’s competitiveness, particularly in the face of climate change, global supply chain shifts, and rising costs. How Ottawa responds to B.C.’s proposals may significantly shape the upcoming budget discussions and the province’s ability to advance its ambitious projects.
