Major CFL Rule Changes Aim to Boost Action and Scoring
Single Point Rule Reworked
The Canadian Football League is rolling out sweeping rule changes designed to increase action and boost scoring. One of the most significant updates removes the automatic “single” point awarded when a missed field goal, punt, or kickoff sails through the end zone untouched. Starting in the 2026 season, teams will only score a single if the returner fields the ball in the end zone and is tackled there or voluntarily concedes while attempting a return.
New Play Clock and Bench Arrangements
To improve game flow, the CFL will introduce a 35-second automatic reset of the play clock after each play, intended to maintain momentum and reduce downtime. In addition, beginning in 2026, team benches will be positioned on opposite sides of the field to reduce sideline congestion and speed substitutions.
Field Size Changes Coming in 2027
More dramatic changes take effect in the 2027 season. The league will shorten the field from 110 yards to 100 yards, reduce end zones from 20 to 15 yards, and move the goalposts from the goal line to the back of the reconfigured end zones. The field width will remain at 65 yards. League officials say these adjustments should increase end-zone completions, favour touchdowns over kicks, and produce more high-impact plays.
League Officials Expect More Excitement
Officials anticipate these changes will raise scoring averages and create a faster, more dynamic product for fans while preserving key elements of the CFL’s identity. The phased rollout—rule changes in 2026 and field reconfiguration in 2027—gives teams and venues time to adapt.
