KELOWNA, B.C. — City council is set to review a comprehensive transportation safety report outlining collision trends and infrastructure priorities across Kelowna. Prepared by city staff, the report highlights key areas of concern for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, and recommends upgrades to make local roads safer as the population continues to grow.

Vision Zero Framework Guides Strategy

The report adopts the Vision Zero framework — a global approach that aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries through street design improvements, better signage, and expanded safe infrastructure for vulnerable users. Data shows that intersections and high-traffic corridors remain the most dangerous points, with most collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists.

Among the recommendations are:

  • Expanding protected bike lanes
  • Improving crosswalk visibility
  • Redesigning high-risk intersections

Balancing Safety with City Growth

Council members will evaluate the recommendations against budget limitations and competing city priorities. Despite financial pressures, there is broad support among officials for advancing road safety initiatives as a means to improve quality of life and community well-being.

City staff emphasize that investing in safer streets not only saves lives but also encourages active transportation, reduces congestion, and helps build healthier, more connected neighborhoods. The review marks an important step in Kelowna’s long-term transportation strategy as the city continues to expand.
