Global News Cuts Dozens of Jobs in B.C. and Alberta
Global News has confirmed significant layoffs across its western operations, with 46 positions eliminated in British Columbia, Alberta, and Eastern Canada. The cuts include 26 journalist roles, alongside staff in online, technical, and editing departments.
Unifor, the union representing many affected employees, says the changes will weaken local coverage. Among those laid off is longtime Global BC online journalist Simon Little. Corus Entertainment, Global’s parent company, says the reductions are part of an efficiency drive, introducing new workflows and technologies to “make Global News sustainable into the future.”
The layoffs come as Corus faces financial pressure, reporting an 11 per cent year-to-date drop in revenue and a $50 million quarterly loss. Industry observers warn that while the cuts may ease costs, they risk further eroding local journalism at a time when communities depend on trusted news sources.
